melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the light and heat destroys the follicle

Self-induced fractional photothermolysis · neocollagenesis
3D islands of heat form inside the skin and force a rebuild around them

Bulk photothermal heating · collagen contraction · adipocyte injury
whole-dermis or fat-layer heating held at ~40 °C; collagen tightens, fat cells are stressed

micro-channels are drilled and the surrounding intact skin rebuilds the surface

Non-ablative photothermal contraction · collagen contraction & remodeling
SMOOTH heat shrinks existing collagen and triggers new collagen, nothing is removed
